There are different types of firewalls. Rather than knowing the types of firewalls first you should know what is your requirement. The two types of firewalls are Software and hardware. The most common type and most used firewall are packet-filtering firewalls- packet filtering firewalls prohibit the incoming traffic if the incoming traffic doesn’t match they established a set of security rules. That is it checks the source as well as the destination of the IP address. 

There are two categories of packet filtering firewall 


Stateful firewalls are one of the most secured packet filterings because it keeps the information about the previously incoming packets. This technique is considered most secured as compared to stateless packet filtering


The stateless packet filtering firewall has the work to examine incoming packets independently. They also examine the next incoming packets and lack context, this makes it an easy target for hackers.

Different categories of firewall

Next-generation firewalls (NGFW) 

It consists of encrypted traffic inspection, intrusion prevention systems, and anti-virus, etc.  The basic firewalls have packet headers, deep packet inspection examines.

Proxy firewalls 

 Proxy firewalls will filter the network traffic. It is different from other basic firewalls. After that, it is evaluated. Mostly proxy firewalls have to monitor traffic. It monitors traffic for 7 layers It monitors protocols such as HTTP and FTP, and a proxy firewall will monitor both stateful and deep packet inspection to detect malicious traffic.
